Date

Field Name: Date
Requirement: Optional
Repeatable: No
Search: No
Hide: No
Vocabulary: No
Dublin Core (DC) Mapping: dc.date
MARC Mapping: None
CONTENTdm Data Type: Text
Dublin Core Definition: A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource.
UA Definition: The creation date of the original resource given as text.
Usage:

When deemed important, this optional field is used to generate a creation date for the resource in text format in plain English. The field is always used in conjunction with the Date (YYYY-MM-DD) element, which remains the searchable CONTENTdm date element coded in YYYY-MM-DD format.

Reproduce the Date (YYYY-MM-DD) with a text string formatted as: [Month] [Day], [Year]. Include as many elements as are available. Spell out the months of the year and record the day with one or two characters as appropriate (omitting leading zeroes), followed by the year. When the day is given, separate it from the year with a comma, space.

Precede approximate dates with the word “circa” and follow questionable dates with a question mark.

If the date on the item does not conform to the Gregorian or Julian calendar, convert it and record in Western-style Arabic numerals. Also give the date as found, along with the name of the calendar, in Notes. For example, “Date on item is 2628, which is dated in accordance with the Chinese calendar” (DACS 2.4.5).

As with Date (YYYY-MM-DD), leave the field blank if the date is not known or cannot be estimated. Do not use “Unknown” or “No date.”
