What is happening with our government and open textbooks?

Here are some current bills and policies relating to open access and affordable textbooks:

 

1. The Affordable College Textbook Act (still pending in committee):

Senate Bill 1704, introduced by Senator Durbin of Illinois in 2013. Currently in committee. Companion bill of House Resolution 3538.

2. Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (Passed)

H.R. 4137, passed in 2008. Reauthorizes Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended.

 


3. State of Arkansas Act 175 (passed):

Act requires a list of all textbooks and course materials to be posted at the bookstore and published on the institution’s website for undergraduate courses. Lists have to be posted by noon on April 1st for the summer and fall semesters and November 1st for the spring semester. Late adoptions would need special permission.

 


 

4. SECU Joint Resolution:

An act supporting research into open educational resources for member institutions of the Southeastern Conference.
