Zotero Options

Zotero is available in two formats:

You can install both Zotero Standalone and Zotero for Firefox and use both on the same computer.

You must install Zotero on every computer that you are using for your research.  Using a computer lab?  You can install Zotero for Firefox during your session and then uninstall when done.

Zotero Standalone

Zotero Standalone  runs as a separate program instead of part of your web browser.

It works with Firefox, Chrome and Safari.

Download and install Zotero Standalone just as you would any other program. You will also need to install the Connectors to allow your browser to save items to your Zotero library.

Choose Zotero Standalone if:

  • You prefer Safari or Chrome to Firefox
  • You prefer to run Zotero in its own window instead of in the browser

Getting and Installing Zotero

Download Now button for ZoteroZotero will run on any operating system. Installation only takes a few seconds but you must install Zotero on every compute that you are using for your research.

. To install:

  1. Go to http://www.zotero.org/ and click the red "Download" button.

  2. Choose the option for Zotero Standalone; it should detect your operating system automatically. Zotero in program list

  3. Save the file and install it.  The program shoudl now show up in your list of installed applications.


  4. Nexr, return to the Zotero Installation page and download at least one browser plugin.  There are options for Chrome, Safari and Firefox

If you have any problems, check the Zotero installation page.

Plugins for  Microsoft Word and the Libre / OpenOffice are included in the standalone install.  These allow you to easily cite items from your Zotero library in your papers.
