Data & Information Ethics Workshop

Defining core values and expressing them

Citation Activity Lesson Plan

Parts of a citation (20 min)

Activity: In pairs, have students attempt to guide their partner to the correct source. Students will use sources present on the course LibGuide, and will utilize http://galau.me/?twitter_tweet to show their partners short “tweets,” effectively limiting the amount of characters they have to communicate citation type information.

  • Ask students how the activity went and discuss what strategies were successful and what strategies weren’t.
  • Ask students “What information did you need to tell your partner?”
    • Write answers on the board.
  • Open APA style guide for articles in a periodical and correlate the fields students identified to the required fields.
Check this out! Directions
  • Group up with a partner, and receive a number (1 - 4) from the instructor
  • In your group, select one person to be the sender, and one to be the receiver
  • This is sort of like Battleship - don't look at each other's screens!
  • SENDER
    • Click on the tab above that says Sender and corresponds with the number you were assigned
    • Look at the source, and then type in a brief description in the padlet that will allow your partner to find the source you examined
    • Chat with your partner through padlet only (no talking!) and answer any questions they have
  • RECEIVER
    • Open the tab above with the source number that says Receiver and corresponds to the number you were assigned
    • After a few moments you should see a message appear on your screen in the padlet
    • Try to find the source your partner is describing; if you get stuck, ask for more information by chatting back (no talking!)
