Keep Your Audience in Mind

  1. Keep the audience in mind. What are the most important points?
  2. Make your slides clear. Define terms if necessary.
  3. Don't go over time. Practice to find out how long your talk lasts.
  4. Check your spelling and grammar.
  5. Cite your sources. Saying "No copyright infringement is intended" doesn't cover it.

Why can people paste Youtube videos into pages like this?

You also hereby grant each user of the Service a non-exclusive license to access your Content through the Service, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such Content as permitted through the functionality of the Service and under these Terms of Service." How to make great Powerpoint presentations!

Good presentations:

  • Keep slides simple and clear.
  • Use a font that can be read from the back of the room--at least 28 pt, preferably bigger.
  • Don't crowd slides with too much content.
  • Limit the number of slides to one per minute or less.
  • Pictures help, if they are relevant. Most animation is unnecessary.
  • Music and humor are good within limits.
  • Let the audience read the slides; give augmented, related content.
  • Cite sources, examples, images and audio.
  • Use your own work. Don't use presentations from other classes (without the agreement of the professors) or from other people.

Bad presentations:

Bad presentations:

  • Give too much content per slide
  • Don't cite content, images or clips
  • Don't define terms
  • Are presented with a very casual tone (class projects in video or presentation= equivalent of a serious paper).
  • Are unrehearsed.
