Finding Books and Gov't. Documents

Find books, government documents and journals in the University Libraries using the online catalog. You may search by author, title, journal title, keyword, subject heading, type of material, and more.  Most of the books related to social work are on Level 3 in the late H call numbers, but related materials may be in the BFs, the RCs, and other areas.

Government documents are held primarily on Level Four, East, or online, but there are some on the regular shelves, on microfiche, and in the Law library. The GPO Monthly Catalog, or FDsys, below, can help you identify and locate some government documents.

  • The University Libraries' catalog
Our holdings of books, journals by title, gov't documents, maps, etc.
  • Government Printing Office (GPO) Monthly Catalog
This database shows information about U.S. government documents, including congressional reports, hearings, debates, and records; judiciary materials; and documents issues by executive departments (Defense, State, Labor, Office of the President, etc.)
  • GPO Federal Digital System- FDsys (was GPO Access)
FDsys, a service of the U.S. Government Printing Office, provides free online access to official publications from the Federal Government, including the Congressional Record, Hearings and Reports, the US Code and CFR, and the Budget. Use the advanced search page to select specific government publications or government offices. Most documents date back to the 1990s. For a full list of titles and coverage dates, see http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/browse/collectiontab.action.

In a nutshell...

For an introduction to an area of law, the West Nutshell series is useful. One title is "The law of schools, students and teachers in a nutshell."  They are held in the Law Library on Reserve. A keyword search in our catalog with (topic word and nutshell) will commonly find one.
