This Day in Arkansas History
May 13, 1859
President James Buchanan made Alfred Burton (A. B.) Greenwood the commissioner of Indian Affairs in the U.S. Department of the Interior. Greenwood was an early settler in Benton County who served in local, state, and national public offices for twenty years. During his career, he also served as state representative, prosecuting attorney, circuit judge, U.S. congressman, and tax collector for the Confederacy.
