ArcGIS Online

What is ArcGIS?

ArcGIS is a geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and geographic information. It is used to: create and use maps; compile geographic data; analyze imagery and other geospatial data; share and discover geographic information; use maps and geographic information in a range of applications; and manage geographic information in a database.

The system provides an infrastructure for making maps and geographic information available throughout an organization, across a community, and openly on the Web.

What is ArcGIS Online?

ArcGIS Online is a cloud-based mapping and analysis platform developed by Esri. Launched in 2012, ArcGIS Online now allows users to store and share GIS data online via downloadable datasets, create and publish maps, analyze data, and share with collaborators.

Why use ArcGIS Online?
  • Mapping your data can help to identify spatial patterns that are not easy to spot with tabular data
  • Allows you to map your data without the need to learn ArcGIS Desktop
  • It allows you to create web applications based on out-of-the-box templates. Explore dozens of Story Maps and find ways to showcase your own project

The Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST) administers and manages all UARK ArcGIS user accounts and licenses. If you're a University of Arkansas faculty, staff, or student and ArcGIS Online sounds like something that might be useful to you, please fill out the Requst Access Form below or contact Brian Culpepper at rculpepp@uark.edu for more information.
