The Government Publishing Office started on March 4,1861. The first day of Abraham Lincoln's administration. The Superindent of Documents was created in 1895 and the Depository Library System. There are 5 ways that a library can be designated as a depository library.
- Each member of Congress may designate in his or her district a depository library.
- Land grant colleges and universities
- Libraries of federal agencies
- Highest Appellate court of each state
- Accredited Law Schools.
The Arkansas State Library serves as the Regional Federal Depository Library for the state of Arkansas. The following libraries are federal selective depository libraries located within the state. The University of Arkansas is the largest and oldest (1907) depository in the State.
