How do I set up a research group / department profile in Google Scholar?

Research groups and academic departments often seek to showcase their publications in a professional and accessible way. One effective solution is to create a Google Scholar profile. Below are the steps to follow to set up your profile, along with examples of well-organized research group pages:

Getting Started

  • Create an Account: Visit www.gmail.com and click "Create account." Since you are setting up a profile for a research group or department, use the group’s name when creating the email (e.g., groupname@gmail.com).
  • Setting Up Your Profile: Once your Gmail account is ready, go to the Google Scholar Profile website and click on "Set up your Google Scholar Profile" (see image). You’ll use the email account you just created to establish the profile for the research group. You will be asked to provide details such as the email address and affiliation to complete the setup.
  • Extra Tip: For more detailed information or step-by-step instructions, click the "Setup" tab in the left-hand menu.

Adding Co-authors

Once you're on your profile page, click "Edit" (next to "Co-authors" on the right side – see image) to add the Google Scholar profiles of group or department members. A new window will appear, allowing you to search for and add members by typing their names. Each member must have a public Google Scholar profile to be found in the search. You can add as many profiles as needed.

Keep in mind

  • It may take some time for Google Scholar to index the authors' profiles and display their publications on the departmental page. For more information on how Google Scholar indexes and processes websites and publications, refer to the "Troubleshooting" section.
  • Please note that your departmental profile will not be directly searchable via Google or Google Scholar. To increase visibility, add the profile URL to your institutional or professional website, so users can easily find it.
