Getting Better Results with JSTOR

Tips for searching this database

More Advanced Search Tips

In the Advanced search, you may use some other 'operators' that may improve your results.

1. NEAR 5, NEAR 10, and NEAR 25 get terms within that many words of each other. These are found in the dropdown menus on the Advanced Search page. Proximity tends to increase relationship. Punctuation is ignored in determining proximity.

2. The carat symbol ^ is used to indicate increased relevance in the search. For example, flower^10 pot means that it's ten times more important that the word flower be found in the search, or, looked at the other way, ten times less important that the results contain pot.
