The Vietnam War was the first conflict in which the U.S. military fought in units that were fully racially integrated, but despite this move toward equality, African American troops seemed to suffer greater casualties in the early years of the war because they were often assigned to the front lines. African American soldiers also faced discrimination in base camps and off duty, although in the heat of battle racial differences were forgotten. Ultimately, it was a person's courage that mattered-not the color of one's skin.

On a hot day in July 1919, five black youths went swimming in Lake Michigan, unintentionally floating close to the "white" beach. An angry white man began throwing stones at the boys, striking and killing one. Racial conflict on the beach erupted into days of urban violence that shook the city of Chicago to its foundations.
