EDHP1012: Effective College Learning

This guide has been developed for EDHP1012, but can be used by anyone interested in learning how to learn.

Effective College Learning

EDHP 1012 supports students as they make the transition into a university environment. The focus is on developing and applying college-level thinking and learning skills to specific University courses and on developing a student support base through a class learning community.

Course Objectives

The primary goal of Effective College Learning is to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful at the University of Arkansas and beyond. In order to accomplish this goal, the following learning outcomes have been established. Students will be able to:

  • Become strategic, self-directed learners, as required by a university environment
  • Understand what professors expect of them and how best to communicate with them
  • Set long- and short-term goals to help guide their life as a UArk student
  • Identify and apply the best time management strategies for their personal style
  • Understand how memory works and what strategies improve memory
  • Learn ways to increase their concentration and reduce stress both in class and studying their assignments
  • Learn how to prepare for different types of tests
  • Learn how to create and use self-motivation to accomplish all of the above

Questions to think about:

  • Which of these objectives is the most important to you?
  • How do you motivate yourself and learn?
  • What is one skill you want to get out of college?
