RefWorks Exporting and Importing Instructions

Step-by-step instructions for getting citations out of library databases and into RefWorks

Multiple References

  1. Mark the records you wish to save by clicking Add to Citation Manager.
  2. When you are ready to export records, click the top menu link for Citation Manager.
  3. Select the items you wish to export and choose Download Selected and then RefWorks. 
  4. Your citations will be saved as a txt. file.
  5. To import the references, in RefWorks choose References > Import from the top menu bar.
  6. Select RIS Format as the import filter and RIS format as the database.
  7. Browse for the appropriate file, attach it, then hit the Import button.
  8. Your citations will be imported.

Single Reference

  1. Look for the Cite icon on under the article citation. 
  2. Choose View this Citation  and then Download citation file
  3. Choose RefWorks.
  4. Your citation will be saved as a txt. file.
  5. To import the reference, in RefWorks choose References > Import from the top menu bar.
  6. Select RIS Format as the import filter and RIS format as the database.
  7. Browse for the appropriate file, attach it, then hit the Import button.
  8. Your citations will be imported.
