RefWorks Exporting and Importing Instructions

Step-by-step instructions for getting citations out of library databases and into RefWorks

Note, in some cases, full bibliographic metadata may not be available, especially for older newspaper files.  Please review your imported citations carefully.  

Legacy Interface

  1. Search for the desired item and view the full record.
  2. Click the link "Citation...Export" on the upper left of the document viewer.
  3. You will be promoted to save the citation as an *.RIS file.
  4. Log into RefWorks, if you are not already logged in.
  5. In RefWorks, choose RIS Format as the Import Filter and Reference Manager as the Database. Browse for the appropriate file, attach, then hit the Import button. The item imports.

Readex AllSearch (New Interface)

  1. Search for the desired item and view the full record.
  2. Click the link "Citation" on the upper left of the document viewer.
  3. Under the Export Citation options, choose RefWorks. 
  4. Log into RefWorks, if you are not already logged in.
  5. The item imports.
