Permission Requests

Keep in mind that when writing for publication, you may be required to provide copyright permission for extensive text and/or images used from other articles, even if the publications are your own work and even if the use would fall within "fair use" guidelines for classroom or research use. Publishers Using Copyright Clearance Center Rights Link

Below is a list of publishers with a link to their permission information. These publishers will most likely redirect you to a Copyright Clearance Center service called Rights Link . That was their preferred option when they were added to this list.

American Chemical Society
On their FAQ page, question 24 states "You may reuse all or part of the Submitted, Accepted, or Published versions of your ACS papers in your thesis or dissertation. Such reuse is permitted subject to the ACS' Ethical Guidelines to Publication of Chemical Research and you should secure confirmation from the respective ACS journal editor(s) to avoid potential conflicts with journal prior publication policies."
American Physical Society
British Medical Journal (BMJ )
BMJ clearly states it is acceptable to to reproduce portions of BMJ content in his/her doctoral thesis or dissertation. For full article/chapter content, please contact BMJ directly to obtain approval. If your license is for use in a thesis or dissertation, your thesis may be submitted to your institution in either print or electronic format. If your thesis, or dissertation, is to be published commercially, then you must reapply for permission. Review the FAQ page.
CRC Press
Elsevier (ScienceDirect)
Elsevier clearly states it is acceptable to reuse your articles in your thesis or dissertation. Review the Author's Rights and Responsibilities page.
IEEE
IEEE no longer requires permission for reuse of your article in your thesis or dissertations. But there are some requirements.
