Trade publications are industry-specific publications made by professionals in that field for practitioners in that field and include reports, news, statistics, trends and other information relevant to that industry. They may be published by trade or professional associations. Some databases have a search limiter for trade publications on the Advanced Search screen, as shown below for ProQuest Central. Look for a Source Type or Publication Type box.Remember NOT to check the scholarly or peer-reviewed journal limiter.
Grey literature are produced by government, academics, business and industry in print and electronic formats, and are not controlled by commercial publishers. It includes theses and dissertations, conference papers and proceedings, research reports, government documents, technical notes and specifications, proposals, data compilations, clinical trials, etc. The term “grey literature” comes from the uncertainty of the status of this information, or material in the "grey" area between the black and white contrasts of academic vs. popular or commercial publications.
