1863 pocket diary recording the experiences of a supply clerk from Grand Rapids, Michigan, during his service near DeValls Bluff and Helena, Arkansas, and of his return to home.

Includes 17 letters written by Milton Chambers while in Helena and Little Rock to his brother, Armory K. Chambers, in Glenwood, Iowa. The earliest is dated June 14, 1863, and the latest December 28, 1864. The majority of the letters describe routine garrison duties and troop morale, but a vivid description of the Red River Expedition accurately documents Milton's combat experience.

Comprised of documents filmed from the holdings of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, this collection covers pamphlets relative to the American Civil War. It contains not only contemporary documents of the war years, but also pertinent antebellum sources, including slavery and states' rights topics, and many postbellum materials such as memoirs and veterans' pension petitions. The Freedmen's Bureau (Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands) was established in March 1865 and was responsible for the welfare of newly freed citizens of the formerly Confederate states. It replaced and served as an office within the War Department. The Freedmen's Bureau documents, all from National Archives Record Group 105, provide detailed evidence from each southern state of the conditions of African Americans during the Reconstruction period.
