Welcome to the Composition II Research Guide

This graphic welcomes you to the Composition Two Research guide. There are 5 boxes going down vertically. The first box states: How to search for genres found at the library. The next states how to search for genres on the internet. The third box states: Refining your topic/ expanding your search. The fourth box states: MLA style. The last box states: And more.

Genres of Information

Information can be packaged in many different genres, which may also be called formats. Audience, tone, and content can vary by genre/format, and not all genres/formats are easy to find. Some genres/formats are considered more academic while others have little academic value. The chart below shows how some common information genres/formats rank on a scale from less academic to more academic and also shows where those genres/formats are most easily found.

Chart showing common information genres. Genres are sorted into those that are more academic like peer-reviewed articles and less academic like blogs. The chart shows which genres are easiest to find at the library vs on the internet.

Chart based on graphic created by St. Edward's University's Munday Library.
