The collection consists of general and NAACP correspondence of Mrs. Bates; the correspondence of her husband, L. C. Bates from 1960 to 1974; correspondence, grant proposals, partial financial records and other materials relating to the Mitchellville OEO Self-Help Project, 1968-1980; memorabilia, honors and awards, photographs and newspaper clippings; and audio tape and film.

The Black Studies Program at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville was established in the fall of 1969 to educate students on the history, culture, and problems of African Americans. This collection covers the establishment and early years of the Black Studies Program at the U of A and includes minutes, reports, and notes of the Committee as well as course descriptions, correspondence, articles, and miscellaneous materials.

Geleve Grice was one of the most prolific Black photographers in Arkansas' history. The Geleve Grice Photograph Collection primarily consists of photographic prints, slides, and negatives that were made by Geleve Grice during his life and career as a photographer. Important Black figures featured in his photographs include Muhammad Ali, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Maya Angelou, Wiley Branton, Dr. Edith Irby Jones, Ida Rowland Bellegard, Dr. Raymond Miller, Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Silas Hunt.

Gordon Morgan was the first African American professor at the University of Arkansas and participant in the Civil Rights movement on campus and in the community. The collection includes books, articles, and essays by Morgan and unpublished works documenting the Black experience on campus.

This collection contains materials donated by the current Black Students Association, which was originally named the Black Americans for Democracy and began on the University of Arkansas campus in the late 1960s.
