Library Annex FAQ

What is the high-density library annex?

The new library annex is a high-density, off-site facility designed to house low-use items owned by the University of Arkansas Libraries. The facility also has a preservation and conservation area where materials are cleaned, repaired, and restored; a digitization and workspace area for staff; an area for maps and microforms; and a large, climate-controlled storage space where books and other materials will be housed. The 27,000-foot storage facility will hold approximately 1.8 million volumes when filled to capacity.

Where is the high-density library annex located?

The high-density library annex is located at 769 Government Avenue, off Hill Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard in south Fayetteville.

Who designed the high-density library annex? Who constructed it?

Perry Dean Rogers | Partners Architects is the design architect for the high-density library annex and Miller, Boskus, Lack Architects is the architect of record; ConReal is the general contractor.

How much did the high-density library annex cost?

The high-density library annex construction budget was $11.4 million, which was paid in part by the Facilities Fee.

What services will the high-density library annex provide?

In addition to storing books, journals, maps, microforms, artwork, and Special Collections materials in a climate-controlled area, the high-density library annex will provide scanned copies of print journal articles, book chapters, and other similar items and deliver the scans via email. A courier service will retrieve requested items and bring them to the main campus area four times a day during the week and once on the weekend.

Is there on-site access in the high-density library annex for researchers?

No. For maximum efficiency and to maintain climate control of the materials, the high-density library annex stacks are not accessible to the public. In keeping our annex closed to the public, our goal is to not limit or prohibit access but to maximize the use of space while providing the best access possible to our collections. A robust virtual browsing tool has been incorporated into the Libraries’ online catalog.

Can community borrowers and guest patrons request items from the Library Annex (LINX)?

Yes, community borrowers have the ability to request items from the Library Annex. Steps on how to do so can be found in the Library’s FAQ here

As for guest patrons that are not affiliated with the Library or University, a process to obtain items from the Library Annex has been created. Steps on how to request items for patrons can be found below or here in the Requesting items from storage for Library Guests section.

Additional Library Annex information can be found here and Library Annex FAQs can be found here.

For staff [on the staff guide]

When public patrons who are not affiliated with the university in any way and are not community borrowers would like to request materials from the Library Annex to use in the library, staff should use the pretend patron “Maggie Visitor” to place an item level hold.  In the note field of the hold, please include the visitor’s name, your name, and the date the visitor is expected to be visiting.

If visiting on a Monday – Friday, same-day requests must be placed before 2:00 pm for the item to be delivered to Mullins before 5:00 pm.  If this is the case, before placing the hold, please call LINX (479-879-9557) to be sure that the request can be fulfilled (the lift is working properly, no events are planned, etc.)  For Sunday visits, the request must be placed before 5:45 pm on Saturday.  There are no deliveries on Saturdays, or during University holidays or breaks.

Items for visitors should be filed under “Visitor, Maggie” on the hold shelf.  When communicating with patrons and assisting them with placing a hold, please let them know that they will need to identify themselves as a visitor to retrieve the materials they had requested.  The note field on the printed hold slip should indicate which materials are intended for which visitor.

  1. If the visitor’s request for materials is made on the same day as they intend to visit:
    1. Call LINX (479-879-9557) to ensure that requests can be fulfilled that day (the lift is working properly, no events are planned, etc.)
    2. Make sure the request is placed before 2 pm
  2. Use patron “Visitor, Maggie” to place an item level hold.
  3. In the note field of the hold, include:
    1. the visitor’s name
    2. your name
    3. date the visitor is expected to be visiting.
  4. Be sure the visitor knows that when they arrive, they will need to indicate that they are a visitor when they ask for their materials at the main service desk.
  5. Once the item arrives, check it in as a normal hold and file the holds under “Visitor, Maggie”

[as an FAQ]

What if I am visiting the library but am unaffiliated with the University and would like to look at materials from the Library Annex?

Visitors are always welcome at the University Libraries and to use our materials on site.  Since many of our materials are located in the Library Annex, we recommend searching our library catalog before you visit to ensure the resources you want to use are located in one of the central campus libraries, or so that you can put in a request for materials from the Library Annex so they will be on hand when you arrive.  To place a request for materials from the Annex or to check on the availability of any Libraries’ materials, please call or email User Services at 479-575-4104 or circserv@uark.edu.  If visiting on a Monday – Friday, same-day requests must be placed before 2:00 pm for the item to be delivered to Mullins before 5:00 pm.  For Sunday visits, the request must be placed before 5:45 pm on Saturday.  There are no deliveries on Saturdays, or during University holidays or breaks.  To use materials from our Special Collections, please visit https://libraries.uark.edu/SpecialCollections/research/default.asp and https://libraries.uark.edu/specialcollections/forms/ to learn more about using and requesting these collections.
