About this Collection

Early English Newspapers

About
This collection is based on the two largest collections of 17th and 18th century English newspapers in the world, obtained by private collectors. The library of Dr. Charles Burney, containing more than 700 volumes dating back to 1603, was acquired by the British Museum (now the British Library) in 1818. That of John Nichols was purchased by the Bodleian Library at Oxford University in 1865. Many of Burney's and Nichols' holdings once were owned by Narcissus Luttrell and his notes can be found on many of the papers in the collection. Combining material from these two Collection and supplemented by other sources, the microfilm set now includes more than 640 titles. The University Libraries have purchased approximately one fourth of this collection.
