EndNote Exporting and Importing Instructions

Help with exporting citations from library databases into your EndNote account.

Gale

Multiple References

  1. From a search results list  mark the records you wish to save.
  2. When ready to view / export your saved records, click the More menu then My Folder on the top menu bar.
  3. Choose Citation Tools from the right menu. 
  4. Choose Export to.. EndNote from the bottom drop-down menu. 
  5. Your file will be saved as a citation.ris file. 
  6. Log into EndNote, if you are not already logged in.
  7. Under the Collect tab, select Import References.
  8. Click Browse to locate and attach the saved file. Under filter, select RefMan RIS, select the group where you would like the citation to be placed, then hit Import. 
  9. Your references should be automatically imported into your account

Single Reference

  1. From a single record / detailed record view, choose Citation Tools from the right menu. 
  2. Choose Export to.. EndNote from the bottom drop-down menu. 
  3. Your file will be saved as a citation.ris file. 
  4. Log into EndNote, if you are not already logged in.
  5. Under the Collect tab, select Import References.
  6. Click Browse to locate and attach the saved file. Under filter, select RefMan RIS, select the group where you would like the citation to be placed, then hit Import. 
  7. Your reference should be automatically imported into your account

Gale Legacy Databases

Single Reference

  1. View the full record for an article you wish to save.
  2. Choose the CITE or Citation Tools Icon on the top menu bar.
  3. A new window will open.
  4. Under the options for "Export to third-party software, choose EndNote and click Export.
  5. Your file will be saved as an *.ris file. 
  6. Log into EndNote, if you are not already logged in.
  7. Under the Collect tab, select Import References.
  8. Click Browse to locate and attach the saved file. Under filter, select RefMan RIS, select the group where you would like the citation to be placed, then hit Import. 
  9. Your reference should be automatically imported into your account

Multiple References (selected databases)

  1. Mark the items you wish to save in a results list by checking boxes.
  2. When you are ready to export, clicked the MARKED ITEMS tab on the upper menu.
  3. Look for a Citation Tools icon on the upper right.  
  4. Under the options for "Export to third-party software, choose EndNote and click Export.
  5. Your file will be saved as an *.ris file. 
  6. Log into EndNote, if you are not already logged in.
  7. Under the Collect tab, select Import References.
  8. Click Browse to locate and attach the saved file. Under filter, select RefMan RIS, select the group where you would like the citation to be placed, then hit Import. 
  9. Your references should be automatically imported into your account
