EndNote Exporting and Importing Instructions

Help with exporting citations from library databases into your EndNote account.

WorldCat (FirstSearch)

  1. Search for the record(s) you wish to export.
    1. Select the record(s) by clicking the checkbox(es) to the left of the record(s).
    2. At the top of the page, click the Export button.
    3. On the new screen:
      1. To the right of Export, select Marked records ....
      2. To the right of Export To, select EndNote.
      3. Then, click Export.
      4. If prompted, save the file; it will have an .CIW extension.
  2. Log in to EndNote.
    1. Under the Collect tab, select Import References .
    2. Click Browse to locate the saved file.
    3. From the Import Option drop-down menu, select EndNote Import .
    4. From the To drop-down menu, select the group where you would like the record to be placed.
    5. Finally, click Import .

WorldCat.org

  1. Create a WorldCat.org personal account, if you have not already done so, at http://www.worldcat.org/account/?page=register. Log into your account.
  2. Mark the records you wish to save by clicking the checkboxes, or select all on any page.
  3. Select a list from the pull-down menu to save your records to. Private lists can only be seen by you when you are logged in; public lists can be shared with others by means of an emailed link.
  4. When you have finished selecting records, Select "My WorldCat" from the top menu and then select "My Lists."
  5. In the Citations view select the "Export to EndNote" option.
  6. You will prompted to save the file to your computer with an *.ris extension.
  7. Login to EndNote Web
  8. Under Collect, select Import References.
  9. Click Browse to locate the saved file.
  10. Under Filter, select RefMan RIS, select the group where you would like the citation to be placed, then hit Import.
